The Ultimate House Shifting Packing Material List: Everything You Need for a Seamless Move

Image description When you decide to pack up your house for a move, staring at empty rooms can make your head spin. Where do you even begin? Most people make the mistake of running out to buy a few random cardboard boxes and calling it a day, only to realize halfway through packing that they are out of tape, bubble wrap, or the right-sized cartons for their kitchenware.

Having the right packing supplies on hand before you start boxing up your life saves you time, prevents broken items, and keeps your sanity intact.

1. The Core Containers (Boxes & Bins) Not all boxes are created equal. Trying to pack heavy books in a giant box is a recipe for a ripped bottom and crushed cardboard.

Small Corrugated Boxes: Ideal for heavy items like books, canned goods, tools, and small electronics. They keep the weight manageable.

Medium Boxes: The workhorses of your move. Perfect for kitchen appliances, toys, folded clothes, and miscellaneous room items.

Large & Extra-Large Boxes: Best for lightweight, bulky items like pillows, blankets, winter coats, and lampshades.

Wardrobe Boxes: These come equipped with a built-in metal clothing bar so you can transfer your hanging clothes straight from your closet without wrinkling or taking them off hangers.

Plastic Storage Bins: Great for long-term storage or items you want to keep completely waterproof, though quality cardboard is generally easier to stack in a moving truck.

2. Cushioning and Protective Wraps If it’s fragile, it needs armor. Never let glass or ceramic items touch each other directly inside a box.

Bubble Wrap: The gold standard for wrapping electronics, mirrors, picture frames, and delicate glassware. (Pro tip: wrap with bubbles facing inward against the item).

Packing Paper (Newsprint-free): Clean, unprinted newsprint or white packing paper is essential for wrapping plates, bowls, and mugs without leaving messy ink stains.

Foam Pouches / Sheets: Excellent for wrapping delicate tabletops, porcelain figurines, or separating stacked plates.

Corrugated Cardboard Sheets: Great for sandwiching between large artwork or flat glass tabletops to prevent direct impacts.

3. Tying Down and Securing (Tape & Straps) A box is only as good as the tape holding it together. Flimsy scotch tape or old masking tape will fail under pressure.

Heavy-Duty Packing Tape (Bopp Tape): Invest in thick, high-adhesion plastic packing tape. Buy at least 4 to 6 rolls.

Tape Dispenser Gun: A pistol-grip tape dispenser gun is an absolute game-changer. It saves you from constantly hunting for the tape end and speeds up your packing tenfold.

Stretch Wrap (Pallet Wrap): This clinging plastic wrap is incredible for wrapping around dresser drawers to keep them shut, bundling loose bed slats together, or securing cushions on couches.

Twine or Zip Ties: Handy for bundling loose cables, securing rolled-up rugs, or tying down odd shapes.

4. Labeling and Organization Supplies There is nothing worse than arriving at your new house and having to open thirty different boxes just to find your toothbrush.

Thick Permanent Markers (Sharpies): Get a few black and colored markers. Write the room destination and a brief description of contents on at least three sides of every box.

Color-Coordinated Coding Labels: Assign a specific color tape or sticker to each room (e.g., Red for Kitchen, Blue for Master Bedroom). Movers can instantly match boxes to the correct rooms in your new house.

Ziploc Bags (Assorted Sizes): Essential for dismantling furniture. Put all screws, bolts, and TV remote controls into small Ziploc bags and tape them directly to the bottom of the corresponding furniture piece or electronics console.

Pro Packing Tips to Keep in Mind Don't Over-Pack Large Boxes: Keep heavy boxes under 15–20 kg so you (or your movers) don't strain your back trying to lift them.

Fill All Empty Gaps: Never leave empty space inside a box. Shifting items break during transit, so fill any voids with crumpled packing paper, socks, or old towels.
